So, imagine the scenario. A shady organisation, sanctioned by Government but above the law, dealing with organised criminals, bent coppers and other nefarious baddies that the criminal justice system can't cope with effectively.

This organisation is headed by a dour, secretive Scotsman with a dangerous edge and a wide collection of pithy epithets. His two key operatives are a cheeky jack-the-lad type from the north west of England, with a shady past and a wide range of dubious talents, not to mention a way with the ladies, and a more thoughtful, introspective, ruthlessly efficient but reluctant killer with a conscience.

What could I possibly be describing? Well, actually it's The Fixer. The latest offering from Kudos, ep 1 screened last week (twice) on ITV1, and ep 2 is on tonight. And I can't wait - it's brilliant.

Andrew Buchan is superb as hitman John Mercer, reluctantly brought into the organisation by force of circumstance and a combination of veiled threats and outright blackmail by Cowley, sorry Lenny. He plays the part very low-key, his expression so unchanging that you find yourself reacting to every twitch or swallow as if it were an agonised scream. It's all in the eyes. Also, he's a hottie, which is nice.

The series hinges around Mercer, with a particularly nasty backstory involving his sister, who is played by the wonderful Liz White. He is supported by strong peripheral characters - his sort-of-sidekick Calum, who was initially a tad too chirpy but is undergoing a few reality checks now, and not before time; the aforementioned Lenny, superbly ruthless, clearly committed to his cause but with a 'greater good' approach that seldom bodes well, and a script that literally could have been Cowley's; Rose, the honey-trap (for this I'm reading 'token woman' but I may be pleasantly surprised as time goes on); and a very shadowy henchman who has little to do but hang around looking menacing and snarling unintelligibly occasionally.

I'm seriously thrilled with this addition to the TV schedules, even after one ep I've got that 'oooh goody it's Monday night at last' feeling going. And I'll be ficcing it as soon as I've worked out who to slash! (edging towards Lenny/Mercer at the mo).

Ooh, that sounds good. But I really don't need another obsession.

When is it repeated? I'm out tonight...
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

Hee! You may not need another obsession...

(Actually, for me this makes up for A2A, which not being an obsession of any sort leaves me with a vacant slot. So to speak.)

It's repeated on Thursday after the news. At least it was last week, so I'm assuming it will be. If you do get to see it, let me know what you think. :)
