Poetry meme

Pinched this from angeweeks because this is the sort of meme I'd love to see spreading everywhere, and lots of beautiful poetry turning up.

My choice - not the most original, but it actually is my favourite poem, although I worship Yeats to the nth degree and could have posted any one of several.

The meme:

When you see this, post your favourite poem in your journal.

My choice:

He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

HAD I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with the golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams beneath your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams...

William Butler Yeats

Beautiful choice

I love this poem, and in fact was reading this very one the other night!

*applauds your choice*
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

Re: Beautiful choice

*takes bow on Yeats' behalf*

I've known this poem for so long now, and the last part still makes me shiver every single time. Wonderful.

This is a wonderful choice, memorable and evocative. I may have to snag this meme but I have no idea how I am going to pick one poem.
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

It's very hard to look at the whole wonderful world of poetry and just select one example. But worth it, just so there's more poetry out there. :D Glad you liked my choice.

As we've discussed before I LOVE Yeats! I have a bad habit of quoting him to people who don't have a clue who I'm talking about. *g*

I considered doing this meme but I'm just too much of a poetry geek. Too many possible and no one *obvious* choice.
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

Yes, I do seem to remember you're not averse to his work! (I thought of you when I posted this, in fact.)

It is a hard meme, that's for sure - the competition is fearsome. Even when I'd decided beyond doubt that I was going with Yeats, narrowing it down was a toughie. (And Blake sitting crying in the corner didn't help! I feel so unfaithful now!)

The following has been sitting quietly amongst my bunnies for ages. I might just have to write it now...

Waking up, knowing the other's awake because so familiar with breathing etc in car in stakeouts, finally saying 'hey' and touching, other pausing for a moment before rolling over and doing the same. They tread carefully for the tread on each others dreams.
