Fanfic - it's in the genes!

Hi y'all! (See, American now!) I'm back!

Thanks for all the birthday messages, lush pictures (and a gift! :DD and fic! :DD Thanks for the reminder, Faws, I've got it bookmarked as part of the Great Catch-Up), and also for all the SPN recs (keep 'em coming!). I will go through and answer individually if I haven't already.

I've just spent the week in Washington DC, and it was just fantastic. I went 2 years ago, and seriously, the difference is marked - there's an air of excitement, of hope and pride, around the city that you can practically reach out and grab, and it really does centre round Obama. So many people wanted to talk about him (and his flippin' dog!) all the time. And baseball! How good is that??! I'm totally sold.

Anyway, the main reason for this post is maternal pride, so excuse the self-indulgence. I came back to find that my 7-year-old had written his first fanfic! It's a Doctor Who story, and I've copied it verbatim apart from correcting a couple of spellings. Please feel free to ignore - I'm just so excited I had to share! :DD

Doctor Who and the Ghost Tree

The TARDIS landed in an old looking garden with an old stumpy tree. Flowers were visible in the cold night air. “Wow!” said Donna. Donna is the Doctor’s companion. She has crystal blue eyes and hair as orange as the sun. The Doctor is a tall man with excellent speed. He has brown spiky hair and piercing green eyes which sometimes twinkle. The Doctor is never afraid to try new things. He is a brave man. Donna is mostly brave but a bit of a wimp.

“Where are we?” said Donna.

“We’re in the Garden of Haunt,” said the Doctor. “It’s far in the future.” As the Doctor said this, a shadow covered one of the walls and slipped away.

“What was that?” said Donna.

“What was what?” said the Doctor, pulling out a banana.

“What have you got that banana for?” hissed Donna.

“Bananas are good,” said the Doctor cheerfully.

Suddenly a long, moaning tune echoed in the moonless night. “Ahhggrrrr!” shrieked the Doctor and Donna.

The same shadow that Donna had seen covered the wall again. The Doctor was thinking so he did not notice the shadow was advancing. Then he turned round and shrieked with terror. He got his sonic screwdriver and waved his sonic device at the shadow.

“That was a Pyrovillian ghost,” said the Doctor who was remarkably surprised. Then Donna looked at the tree with a suspicion of worry.

“That tree has a hole that is the size of a ghost,” said Donna.

The Doctor looked at the tree. Suddenly he shrieked, “This is the home of the ghosts!”

Then out of the tree flew hundreds of ghosts. They made a circle round the TARDIS. The Doctor and Donna were with it. The Doctor suddenly gasped with fright and then ran into the TARDIS. Donna followed.

“We have to break the circle,” said the Doctor. He immediately tapped a key on the computer and the ghosts separated. The Doctor flew the TARDIS back to Donna’s house and they both lived happily ever after.

Hey welcome back... Erm, that's a bit odd to type really considering that I'm on this side of the Atlantic. :D

As to the fan fiction, what a star! :D I can honestly say that I've read much more dodgy ff written by adults and posted at coms.

I particularly enjoyed the exposition on the Doctor and Donna and the sudden appearance of the Doctor's banana... you really are an influence on your kids aren't you? *g*

I have to admit that the Doctor shrieking so much amused me too... and awww! A happy ending! :D
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2009-04-18 20:43 (UTC) (Link)
The shrieky Doctor amused me too - and the banana bit made me giggle. Obviously he's a bit young yet to be getting in-depth accurate characterisation, but that bit did work well!

Thanks! It's been a great week, really brilliant, but it's good to be home. :)

Ah bless! Still at the happily ever after stage :) He's only seven? It's very well thought out and you have every right to be proud.

Welcome back to Blighty! Are there any pics from your trip to the colonies? I was thinking of you and wondering if you were over there yet.

Hey!!! Welcome back - and yay for the adorable fic from the prodigy. The Doctor is a tall man with excellent speed. He has brown spiky hair and piercing green eyes which sometimes twinkle. The Doctor is never afraid to try new things. He is a brave man. Donna is mostly brave but a bit of a wimp. Brilliant! I love it.

So, Americana-ised enough to start scribbling yet??

Blimey, you truly have a stick pointy enough to rival even the Drayce's! :D Yeah, I think I'm getting close. The bunnies are beginning to nuzzle less gently! I've got a full-on week coming up, but I think maybe the following week I'll have a crack at something, even if it's just Flashslash to start off with.

Prodigy, eh? :DD *maternal bosom swells with pride*

So that's where you've been - playing baseball with first puppy! I was beginning to wonder where you were.

Great first fanfic! I could almost like that Donna... Almost.

And I feel bad and pimpy about that fic now but I thought it might disappear into the depths and you'd never know...

Anyway, welcome back matey!
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2009-04-18 20:54 (UTC) (Link)
First puppy! XD I knew it was going to be that kind of week when the coach driver that picked us up from Dulles started waxing lyrical about Bo within 5 minutes of us hitting the road!

Not to feel bad and pimpy - reminders are always genuinely welcomed because I have the world's worst memory! Besides, self-pimpage should be encouraged. I'll comment on the fic itself, obviously, but I am totally chuffed to little tiny bits that someone wrote fic for me. *massive hugs*

Wow--what a great welcome home present! I am impressed that a 7-year-old wrote that. Well done. It's charming, in all the best ways.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip! I haven't been in Washington for quite some time, it's good to know the atmosphere itself has changed. It certainly feels that way elsewhere in the country.

And...baseball, huh? Did you go to a Nationals game, then?
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

It's charming, in all the best ways.

Thank you! *maternal bosom swells further, bra straps begin to groan under the pressure*

Did you go to a Nationals game, then?
Oh yes! Nationals vs Phillies, and just about everyone in the city had kind of laughed hollowly at us when we said we were going. And then the Nationals WON! 8-2!! The atmosphere was stunning. And I now have actual favourite baseball players! (Ryan Zimmerman - my hero! *sigh*)

Oh, my! Your boys has a future as writer! I just couldn't stop the giggling at the banana part *laughs*
And “That tree has a hole that is the size of a ghost,” said Donna.? Amazing!
And we even get a happy ending *smiles* You have every right to be proud =D
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2009-04-19 12:55 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you! :D I am proud, of course, and also delighted that he's writing at all - it can be pretty hard to motivate boys to get into creative writing. Now, just have to wait a few years till I can introduce him to the concept of slash...:0 XD

Welcome back and am glad you had a great trip away. Have never been to Washington and it sounds great. Oh and yay for fic writing extending to the next generation *grin*

Thanks! It was a really interesting trip, and I would thoroughly recommend going if you ever have the chance. :)

Welcome back! And how great is it that you got to see some baseball?!? God, I love going to baseball games, something about dying sports just... *sigh*

And your 7-year-old lad's first fic is ridiculously charming, way better than I was writing at his age! Seriously, the pacing of that dialogue between the Doctor and Donna was spot-on, way better than quite a bit of the crap I've seen posted about, you should be very proud of him indeed!
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2009-04-19 13:02 (UTC) (Link)
I loved the baseball to bits, and I really didn't expect to at all. You just don't get the impact on TV, with all the commercial breaks and so on.

way better than I was writing at his age!
Me too - or at least, I just wouldn't have had the interest to settle down and write it. I think it's a real help that he sees me writing and knows first-hand that people do actually write for pleasure. Hopefully he'll carry on now he's started.

That was one of the best DW fics I ever read (admittedly, I've read, like, 8.) But it was excellent. And for a seven year old it was really great writing.

I missed you and your birthday. I was also taking a break from the intarwebs, so I didn't see, but I hope you had a great time and, ooooh, do we get to see pics of Washington?

I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2009-04-19 13:35 (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! Like I said to Sev, I'm basically just pleased he enjoys writing enough to settle down and do something like this. It's such a struggle trying to persuade kids that writing can actually be recreational rather than a school chore.

I'vr got 'posting Washington pics somewherre on my to-do list, but it's quite a long list! Hopefully I'll get round to it soon. Hope you enjoyed your break too. x

Cool! :D I'll assume you've actually read more than three (an assumption which seems to be borne out by a quick glance at your LJ) and say - hey, thanks!

(Must admit to a certain amount of curiosity re. fics #1 and #2!)

<3<3<3!!

nos recced your son's adorable fic so i came to read it. it was possibly the cutest story ever written. "The Doctor flew the TARDIS back to Donna’s house and they both lived happily ever after." awwwwwwwwe. i think his characterisation was remarkably good, in that wonderfully straightforward kid kind of way. i'm reminded of when i was in high school and my little sister wrote a sherlock holmes story (because i loved sherlock holmes), and it was silly but also weirdly accurate and lots of fun.

also, i totally want to make an icon now that says: "The Doctor is a tall man with excellent speed."

Thank you! I thought the descriptions were interesting as an insight into the mind of a 7 year old boy - he's obviously looked much more closely at Donna than Ten (unlike his mother! :D)

Oh, that's adorable!! Very well plotted and written, for a seven-year-old. And very true to what Ten would do in that circumstance ("Has anyone tried pushing this little red button over here?") I really enjoyed it.

Hi!

We don't know each other, but I came from a friend's journal.

My 12-year-old, now 13, started writing fan fiction and I was THRILLED. You must be very proud.

This good at 7 . . . imagine how good at 12, and beyond!

Thanks! I was pretty delighted - more at the idea that he is interested in writing and gets pleasure from it than anything, although he impressed me with the structure. Just got to keep him into it now! Hope your child carries on too. :)
