HELLLOOOOOO!! *manages to sneak onto the webs, waves madly at all*

Okay, I know this is a really bad plan - I'm failing pretty epically at too many fandoms already, last thing I need is another - but, you know, when temptation is put so squarely in your way...

What it is, I was at my mum's house the other day, throwing away her video collection (trust me, it was the merciful thing to do, although I did happen to notice in passing that she has pretty much the entire first three seasons of Professionals on DVD - go Mum!). I happened to come across 10 episodes of Stargate SG1, mostly Season 1, but not from the very start of the season. So I 'rehoused' them, and now I'm wondering what my next step should be.

(So I decided to create a poll, because I've never done that before! :DD

Poll #1545222 Stargate SG1 action plan

Should I watch:

Brief Candle/Thor's Hammer
Fire and Water/Hathor
None of these, but do rush out and buy S1 - they must be viewed in strict chronological order
None of these - trust me, SG1 is not for you.
I have no opinion, but I like checking boxes in polls.

Please let me know any useful details (like, who is the slash potential and are they hot? You know, the important stuff!) in comments.

Thank you! :D *hugs you all, SG1 aficionadoes or not*

Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

I've never really watched SG1 or SGA, but when the subject of SG1 comes up, the lovely Vic always posts this *very* slashy piccie:

I know that's Richard Dean Anderson but I don't know the name of the other bloke.
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

Which one? I'd say the one with the glasses has hottie potential there (although the other one is blessed with a fine pair of forearms). And yes, I'm definitely getting slash vibes!

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

Richard Dean Anderson is the grey haired one. I only know his name because he was MacGuyver, another show I know by reputation but not by actually having watched it. *g*

On my flist, I actually hear far more about SGA, Rodney McKay and John Sheppard in particular.

Apparently these fandoms are huge/were huge(?) and have thousands of stories. I think there's over 30,000 SGA stories at the pit of voles alone.

It's amazing how much fandom info you can pick up by osmosis even on fandoms you don't follow. *g*

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

Oh, now you mention it, Sheppard/McKay has definitely flitted across my consciousness. Maybe I should go for SGA instead - but then, maybe you have to start with SG1 in order to understand SGA. So many questions!

I tend to avoid reading fanfiction till I have at least some familiarity with the canon. The only real exception to that is X-Files, and that's only because I developed a fascination with Krycek. And we all know whose fault that was! *g*

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

I'm the same way, in my case there has to be a *love* of canon first. *g* I'm not a big SciFi fan and while the OH watched some of both SG1 and SGA I never could get myself to sit still and watch it. Mates have tried to recruit me though with stuff like this:

It's supposed to be easy to watch one without the other but I'm not the one to ask.

I think you too have several mates on your flist too who are in to McKay/Sheppard including Ducky and Mikey and Vic likes SG1... although I don't think Mikey likes the canon of SGA. I think there are supposed to be some very good writers at work there whose stories are better than canon. *g*

Ooops accidental catching in the Krycek net eh? *g*

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

That is a brilliant clip! XD

What I'm getting from all this is that the slash is far from accidental, and that's something I find very attractive in canon. It's great fun when a show doesn't take itself too seriously in this way.

*is reminded of that John/Phil RT photoshoot from way back*

Everytime I see this picture my only thought is that it is SO gay. I swear, like fangirls need the encouragement? WTF were they THINKING? HAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

Ghods, yes, he TOTALLY 100% knows what he is doing there. I'm just shocked anyone let him get away with it. I can't help but think that right after the shot was taken, he busted out laughing! heh

Re: Always happy to help with fandom-ish stuff

I never got in to the show but look at this clip above that my mate sent me when trying to get me interested in it. Oh yeah, they know what they're doing. *g*

*waves back*

Michael Shanks is the hottie with the glasses. You have good taste!

I never took to either Stargate, so I'm not a good advisor. But I can do trivia *g* - Michael is married to Lexa Doig who played Backus in "The New Professionals".

Trivia is always good! Clearly she has good taste in men too. Thanks for this. :)
kimboosan at 2010-03-30 23:59 (UTC) (Link)
The first three seasons of SG1 are the only seasons I know, and honestly, they are pretty fun. Not...sophisticated, but fun. I mean, like Dr. Who - great characters, neat concept, corny sets. You dig?

Yes, Jack/Daniel are the hot pair, but for my money I always shipped Jack/Sam (Samantha Carter, the hot blond USAF scientist) - yes, Virginia, Mikey can ship het! LOL! Drayce is right, the fandom used to be HUGE and is still fairly active, and features some awesome writers, but honestly I never got into it. I know it mostly from osmosis and crossovers with SGA.

Which, yes, I *love* SGA fanfic. Canon...well you have to have a taste for the cheesy dumb sci-fi plots to enjoy it. But OMG the fanfic is incredible.

I think with SGU and the death of SG1 and SGA, the fandoms are slowing down, but really there are thousands of excellent stories out there. I do know of a few really good SG1 writers, if you want I can point you that way.
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2010-03-31 10:52 (UTC) (Link)
Shipping het, you say? Hmmm...clearly there is no end to your depravity!

I can certainly get on board with cheesy dumb sci-fi - I grew up with original Star Trek, and that takes all the cheesy dumb awards going! I think I'm going to have to give this a go, and I'll definitely come back to you for fanfic advice when I'm ready for it.

Thanks for the helpful info. :)

I ticked two boxes, Fire and Water/HAthor and Singularity/Cor-ai
Fire and Water is the first time (in the show, that is, we are not talking about the movie now) when they kill Daniel Jackson. Yes, he gets killed a lot. Which he does beautifully. But he always come back, that's why they are SO many crossovers with Highlander *laughs*
And with Hathor you got a pretty good idea about the Goa'uld, who are the baddies, at least at the beginning.
Singularity, OTOH, is a great Samantha Carter episode, with lots of Janet Frasier. Really angsty, and sad, but oh, SO GOOD! Cor-ai is a good Teal'c episode, too.

About slash material? No doubt, Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson.
I'd like to show to the court our Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

Exhibit D

Exhibit E

Yes, Daniel is dying... again!

Exhibit F

Yes, these are they hands *happy sigh*

And I could go on and on and on.

Was this helpful?

bistokids at 2010-03-31 10:57 (UTC) (Link)
Was it ever! Do I have a thing for hunky blokes who die with regularity and style? *takes a moment to ponder Dean Winchester* Why yes, yes I do! :D And angsty episodes too! This is ticking all my boxes. I shall make a start this very night! :D

Thank you so much - I love the pictures!
severinne at 2010-03-31 00:57 (UTC) (Link)
I was naughty and ticked the last box, but that's only because I'm not a good enough SG-1 viewer to connect episode titles to what I remember watching. And yes, I did watch and thoroughly enjoy SG-1 (though I really can't stand SGA) because it's fun and campy and in its later seasons develops this great sense of humour about itself to the point where the show becomes a deliciously ironic take on the whole sci-fi genre. Even the slash is a standing joke, LOL.

So yeah, I recommend it as a good romp, but I'd be hopeful at reccing particular episodes and have never been inclined to dive into its fandom - if it's as huge as I've heard, that's probably a very good thing. :)

bistokids at 2010-03-31 11:01 (UTC) (Link)
Your description of SG1 sounds brilliant - slash as a standing joke is one of my very favourite things! The more I hear, the more I think this is definitely something I should try.

(And ticking the last box is in no way naughty - I'm such a poll addict it's only a matter of time before I tick that one myself! XD )
hambelandjemima at 2010-03-31 06:22 (UTC) (Link)
Sorry, can't help :( It's one of those shows that I'm pretty sure I would like, but I just can't summon up the enthusiasm to start watching.

On another note, it's lovely to see you. Hope things are ok with you ♥
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2010-03-31 11:04 (UTC) (Link)
Thanks for checking in - it's just nice to have contact with people. Things are gradually looking up, thanks for asking. Hopefully I should be able to get online a bit more - but then I've got such a massive backlog of unread fic now, that's almost a daunting prospect in itself!

Hope all's good with you. ♥ backatcha!
angeweeks at 2010-03-31 06:46 (UTC) (Link)
I ticked a box. I like ticking boxes. *g*

I have never watched the series, but I did enjoy the film. This would be because of James Spader. ♥

bistokids at 2010-03-31 11:08 (UTC) (Link)
I like ticking boxes too! :D

I saw the film in the cinema when it came out. That has to be going back a bit now! I enjoyed it well enough, but then I have no especially strong feelings about James Spader.

I don't remember enough to connect titles to episodes, but I do have a spare copy of the (full frontal nudity containing) pilot episode, if you'd like it? I bought the first six seasons at my local PDSA shop and it's delightfully cheesy though, in my opinion, SGA is both better and cheesier. I also have a spare copy of Season one of SGA but it's region one (I had to buy it on region two when my laptop broke) and I would happily post it to you if there was even the tiniest chance of you ever writing Stargate fanfiction. I don't think you have to have seen one to get the other, certainly I came at it backwards, fanfiction then SGA canon, SG1 as an afterthought. SGA has a huge, fabulous and cracky fandom. I haven't excplored so much in SG1 pool but it seems a strange and serious place full of angst and dubcon.
Even if cheesy Sci-fi with cardboard sets is not your thing, I'd say SG1 was worth watching just because they have a pretty blonde lead who, with the exception of one early episode, never wears anything even the slightest bit revealing, even though she'd look totally hot in a bikini. How often can you say that about TV?
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2010-03-31 11:20 (UTC) (Link)
That's incredibly kind of you! I'm resolved to give this SG1 thing a go now, and if I take to it I may well be back to accept your generous offer. Because, full frontal nudity, not something to be turned down lightly! *g*

An attractive woman who is capable of remaining clothed is, indeed, a refreshing touch.

('Strange and serious place full of angst and dubcon' - that actually sounds worryingly enticing! What has fandom made of me?!)
constance_b at 2010-03-31 11:33 (UTC) (Link)
Sadly the nudity is all female, but it's very strange. I watched a lot of SG1 with my six year old, there's no swearing, no particularly realistic violence and then, OMG, untrimmed pubic hair. It's like finding a Smirnoff minature as the free gift in a box of coco pops.
Let me know if you get on with it okay. I've got two shelves of SG1 I'm unlikely to ever watch again, and some of them are duplicates. I've just been too lazy to take them back to the charity shop. My email addy's constancebyfield at hotmail.co.uk if you decide you want any.
saintvic at 2010-03-31 12:03 (UTC) (Link)
In a very unhelpful manner I ticked lots and lots of boxes. I'd say run and buy it but I think you should never do that until you have an idea of it you would like it and you have a good range of eps to give a go and see.

I see drayce has beaten me to the punch in showing you my fav promotional stargate pic *g*. Daniel and Jack are my slash pairing in the show, in fact they were the first pairing I consciously went out and searched for slash fic about *feels all nostalgic*. It isn't ground breaking TV but it is a great watch and, as a big sci fan, I got pulled into the universe. Plus I do love the characters especially Jack (Richard Dean Anderson) and not just because I fancy him....although I do.

There are also lots of archives for the fic for both Stargate SG1 and Atlantis as well as lots of comms. I am very much a lurker but there is some great fic out there.

I was hanging about LJ last night when BK posted so I had to share that piccie, still one of the slashiest promo pics I've ever seen.
saintvic at 2010-03-31 14:03 (UTC) (Link)
It really is and it deserves to me see by as many people as possible. *pets Jack and Daniel*
saintvic at 2010-03-31 12:07 (UTC) (Link)
Forgot to say as long as you know the basic outline of the movie / first episode you should be alright leaping into any of the episodes to give them a go. Let me know if you'd like a little synopsis.
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2010-04-02 10:22 (UTC) (Link)
Thanks, Vic! I did go and see Stargate (the movie) in the cinema - it was a fair time ago, obviously, but I still remember the basic premise, so I should be all right, but if I start watching and it's all confusing I'll be coming back with any amount of stupid questions! Nice to know I have an expert on hand! :D
I'd call you a genius but I'm in the room
elfinessy at 2010-03-31 20:58 (UTC) (Link)
Don't do it!!!!!!!! You'll regret it! I did. I watched this show from the start, I fell madly in love with it. I slashed Jack and Daniel (the 2 in the pic below) for years. Then it all went wrong, horrible, tragically wrong and now, even three series' on, even SGU is two strikes away from never being on my screen again.

I don't even have an icon..!
I, being poor, have only my dreams.
bistokids at 2010-04-02 10:27 (UTC) (Link)
Blimey! I wasn't expecting such vehemence - it's kind of worrying and intriguing all at once. Certainly if I do end up watching, I shall do so with more caution than I might otherwise have done.

Your icon is just fine. *adores*
