Five Things I'm Watching Right Now

So usually this LJ gets reserved for fic, but just occasionally I like to blather on to myself about other stuff I'm excited about. Today, being Wednesday, I'm excited about TV. Here's what I'm up to of an evening when I'm not digging out the LoM, Dr Who or Pros DVDs. (I'm going to try and allocate a slash OTP to each as well, because I have a one-track mind these days!)

1) Spooks
Slash OTP: Bit of a toughie right now, in fact this series is crying out for more slash potential. Adam/Zaff, I guess, if Zaff is still available.

I like what they're doing with this series (S6), it works really well as a more linear storyline. Adam isn't quite as angsty as I feared he might be this time round, and the scriptwriters have been kind enough to write in at least one 'Adam gets punched/hit on the head/drugged' moment to keep me happy! I've sort of got used to Ros now, too, although they've hit a problem with her - she's so consistently hard and miserable-looking that when she actually needs to look upset about something it's tough to tell the difference!

Nice to see Malcolm getting out and about more. And Harry is gorgeous as ever. But oh, I miss Ruth. And I'm still having lots and lots of fun playing 'Spot the rehashed Professionals plotline/character'. This week, poisoned water supplies. Some one in there must be a Pros fan!

2) Heroes
Slash OTP: Oh there's competition here. Especially with the divine Chris Eccleston knocking around. At the moment, I'm going with Peter Petrelli/Sylar.

I am totally totally hooked on this. And, after a bit of a mid-season dip, it's picked up pace now and is really going brilliantly. Especially now that they're not concentrating quite so much on Nicki-Jessica, which was starting to do my head in a bit.

And the best of it is, even though so many people I know have seen this (am I right in thinking S2 is already up and running in the States?) I haven't been spoiled at all, apart from the awareness that there is a S2, and therefore presumably a world to have it in. I don't know what's going to happen! So I make up theories. My current favourite (and bear in mind I'm totally crap at this) is that Sylar kills that girl who can turn into other people - please God let this be true, I don't like her at ALL - and so it's not Peter Petrelli exploding, but Sylar looking like Peter.

Hee - Wednesday today! Heroes day!

3) Torchwood
Slash OTP: Jack/Ianto

I still can't quite believe this has got under my skin to the extent that it has. But there you are. It was that ep with the Cybergirl that did it. I've seldom squee-d so many times in a single episode of anything. And I find Ianto as a character very intriguing.

I suppose, in the end, there's something irresistibly attractive about a cast being so totally enthusiastic and committed to a project as the Torchwood cast appear to be. It really does come across as a labour of love, and so I can buy into it even while seeing its flaws. And also, it's dark. Ish. And I've got butterflies about the next series of DR Who since I read Rusty saying that it would be less dark and more fun, that they had to remember their fanbase was mostly children and casual viewers. So I'm getting my Who!dark where I can. And I like what they do with Jack - the little references and intriguing allusions that beg you to try and put together a timeline and a backstory based on hardly any clues.

4) Long Way Down
Slash OTP: Well, not so hard is it? Ah Ewan and Charley *sigh*

I missed most of Long Way Round, I'm not especially into motorbikes or travel shows and Ewan McGregor has never been someone I've lusted after. So this one has come at me without any warning - and has had all the more impact for that.

As travel shows go, I've seldom seen anything to touch it. (Bruce Parry's The Tribe is the only one I'd value as highly). The one gripe would be that they whizz through places so quickly you don't get to see much of the local colour - but Ewan appears to have this gripe fully covered, so I don't feel I need to give it more space! Anyway, I'm not really watching to see what life in Africa is like (had to giggle last night when they were filming in a general store and going 'OMG it's got stuff in it! Chocolate, crisps! Anything you could want. It's incredible!' and I'm thinking 'It's a shop. We have shops in England too. It's not really all that incredible.')

No, surprise surprise, I'm watching for the slash moments - naked sea bathing, Ewan refusing to give Charley the sexing he craves, watching sunsets together, hugs and casual touching. They are SO an item. I dont care how many wives and kids they have between them.

And next week - all is not well in the garden of Ewan and Charley. HEE! Can't wait.

5) Robin Hood *ducks*
Slash OTP: Sheriff/Gisbourne

If ever something was a guilty pleasure, this is it. Yes, I know Jonas Armstrong has all the emoting skills of a brick, yes, I'm totally aware that Marian's costumes have gone beyond comedic to downright irritating.

But hey, it's fun! And I get to watch it with young boys, and I can vouch for the fact that 6 year olds aren't looking for enotional tension or watching to see if the make-up is authentically period. They want shooting! Fighting! Running around! Getting caught and threatened with horrible deaths! (actually, I want this bit too, expecially when it also includes tying up).

I do wish Jonas A was a bit more adept at the tension moments - having been (still am, in fact) a huge huge fan of Robin of Sherwood, and in particular the delicious Michael Praed, I was used to those stand-off moments (Robin-Gisbourne, Robin-Will, Robin-Sheriff) being pretty damn fine.

And finally we got one such moment this week, but it wasn't with Jonas at all. Inevitably really, it was between the Sheriff and Gisbourne, as the Sheriff found out that Gisbourne had been surreptitiously helping Marian. Quiet, deadly sheriff, and Gisbourne clearly terrified in a completely understated way. Nice up-close threats, eye acting, black leather. Moments like that don't come every day. And they make up for a lot of dross.

This could, I suppose, be a meme, if I had the bottle for such things, which I totally don't. In any case, I'd like to hear what other people are watching outside their active fandoms.

*g* I'll be kind - anyway the only things I'm watching at the moment outside of Pros are:
- episodes of Star Trek (TOS). Realising again that William Shatner is a really great actor, despite the parodying that goes on. And he was a total hunk. I can see K/S, but it doesn't move me like Pros does.

- Bionic Woman. Looks good, and Katee Sackhoff is cool.

- Heroes. Second season, and I'm not taken with anything except for the Peter/Caitlin story arc. Maybe because it has a slight Pros resonance.

That's it!
I, being poor, have only my dreams.

Thank you! :D And ah, that lovely icon again.

I adored Star Trek (TOS), although I haven't watched so much recently as they appear to delight in screening it at 2am or other such times. And yes, I did have a bit of a thing for Kirk - something about the way he fills out that tight tight shirt.:) Never got into any of the newer Star trek stuff - there's just so much of it I don't know where to start.

EEEEEEEP! :DDD Have you any idea how fantastically intriguing this is to someone 3/4 of the way through S1? Yay! Can't wait!

Thank probodie for the icon - she made it ages ago and I've never become tired of it.

Unfortunately any Pros resonance in Heroes is my own interpolation rather than direct referencing - there is skulduggery afoot, guns are pointed at people, it's in Ireland... I'll say no more.

Hmm, what do I watch? What - like 'modern' TV?! Hmm - the antiques roadshow? *g* Okay, let's have a think - I have to say I don't watch any other show and think slash to be honest, but I'll have a go and see how these shows could be...

Top Gear
S/P - hmm, I'd have to go Hammond/May, and then go and wash my brain out with cheap soap.

I love Top Gear, the way the show is filmed is fab, the cars all look gorgeous, and I really like the chemistry between all three of them, they come across as good mates, which is nice to see. And they make me laugh!

S/P - eeep no! Since the main male characters are all related I so don't think slash! Although I'd heap some angst on Niles *evil grin*

Oh Niles, there's something interesting about you. I like Frasier anyway, it's very funny, but no, can't slash it. My fave pairing in this is Niles and Daphne, they make a really cute couple.

S/P - well, it's got to be House/Wilson I guess.

How did Hugh Laurie ever get so fanciable? But what bizarre twist of fate did this happen? But he is, there is something about his grumpy doctor that is just mmm. And yay for Wilson - I fancied that actor to bits in Dead Poets Society.

Actually, trying to think of TV I watch is really hard - I don't actually watch the above all that often, and I hardly ever sit in front of the TV without reaching for a film or DVD! Come back four TV channels, we need you... *g*

Totally! Well, 4 channels and Dave, which I've become a bit attached to since it decided people just wanted to watch wall-to-wall Top Gear, QI and Have I Got News for You. Which, a lot of the time, is exactly what I do want to do!

Haven't seen Frasier, and I've deliberately not watched House so far because I don't need another fandom and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get sucked in. Only a matter of time.

TG, though - magnificent! And, watched through my jaundiced eye, slashy as hell. Because - it's that edginess thing, isn't it? The constant urge to best each other, the teasing, the little sideways glances. The driving through the southern States with man love slogans painted on the car. Little nuances like that! (And yes, Hammond/May, I guess. Or Hammond/Clarkson at a push. Just as long as the Hamster's in there somewhere. Bless.)

Wahahaha - little naunces indeed! *G*

Oh yes, I do love Dave come to think of it, and you have reminded me about 2 other shows I definitely do sit down and watch, Q.I and Have I Got News for You. But can we slash them I wonder...

S/P - Fry and Davies - it's got to be, really!

Again, haven't really pictured them rolling around together before, but they do so love teasing each other, don't they? And Alan Davies - yes, I do have a soft spot for him. It's the hair I think...

Have I Got News
S/P - oh dear, do I have to imagine Ian Hislop nekkid? Oh well, bites pillow (I mean, bullet)... Hislop/Merton

laughs uncontrollably for a second
Ok, serious now. *Looks back at S/P. Mind boggles, laughter starts*
You try it! I cannot think of this pairing without laughing. Oh dear... I'll never be able to watch my fave shows again...
